Academy Report: Sandro Claims Spanish Silverware

Williams Racing Driver Academy Stars Shine in Barcelona

This past weekend, two promising talents from the Williams Racing Driver Academy took to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for an exhilarating series of races. Alessandro Giusti and Oleksandr Bondarev showcased their skills in the competitive environment of the Italian F4 Championship, with Giusti continuing his impressive run of podium finishes and Bondarev making his debut in single-seater racing.

Alessandro Giusti: A Podium Streak Continues

Alessandro Giusti, affectionately known as Sandro, has been on a remarkable trajectory since his standout performance at Paul Ricard in July, where he clinched the top spot. His consistency has been nothing short of impressive, and the Barcelona weekend was no exception.

In Sunday’s Race 2, Sandro started from the front row and managed to secure a commendable P2 finish. His qualifying performance was particularly noteworthy; he topped his group, even outpacing the newly-crowned 2024 champion. However, he faced stiff competition from the other group, where the fastest driver edged him out by a mere 0.061 seconds.

The race itself was a test of nerves and skill, especially after an early Safety Car period. Sandro demonstrated remarkable composure, navigating the final three laps under intense pressure from the driver in P3. His ability to maintain focus and execute clean laps allowed him to cross the finish line in second place, marking his sixth podium of the season. With 18 points from this race and an additional four from Race 1, where he finished P8, Sandro has climbed to P4 in the championship standings, setting the stage for an exciting season finale next month.

Oleksandr Bondarev: A Promising Debut

In contrast, Oleksandr Bondarev, affectionately known as Sasha, was making his first foray into car racing after a successful stint in karting. Transitioning to the Tatuus F4-T-421 machinery is no small feat, especially against seasoned competitors who have been racing all season long.

Sasha’s weekend was filled with learning experiences as he tackled the challenges of single-seater racing. He finished P19, P25, and P18 across the three races, but his results tell only part of the story. Throughout the weekend, he faced various obstacles, including Safety Cars and rolling restarts, which tested his adaptability and racing instincts.

Despite the challenges, Sasha exhibited a commendable level of confidence, making overtakes and engaging in wheel-to-wheel battles from the very first race. Reflecting on his debut, he took to social media to express his satisfaction with his progress, particularly highlighting his improved pace and reduced mistakes in Race 3. "Good progress in Race 3 to end the weekend," he noted, emphasizing his determination to learn and grow as a driver.

Looking Ahead

Both Sandro and Sasha are set to return to the track as the FRECA and Italian F4 seasons draw to a close at Monza from October 25th to 27th. With Sandro aiming to maintain his podium streak and Sasha looking to build on his debut experience, the upcoming races promise to be thrilling for fans and supporters alike.

As the Williams Racing Driver Academy continues to nurture young talent, the performances of Giusti and Bondarev in Barcelona serve as a testament to the program’s commitment to developing the next generation of racing stars. Whether on the podium or in the midst of a learning curve, both drivers are undoubtedly on a path to success in the world of motorsport.
