Man of War—renowned for his abstract lyricism and dynamic delivery—first captured national attention in 1999 with the release of the “Rising Sons” music video. This project was produced by the then-nascent label Syntax Records, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey that would see Man of War become a significant figure in the hip-hop landscape. His unique blend of rapid-fire verses and intricate patterns invites listeners to delve into deep symbolism and evocative themes, making his music a profound experience.
In The Beginning
At the time of its inception, Syntax Records was a fledgling label without distribution or a catalog to distribute. The ambitious plan was to accelerate the label’s launch by creating a broadcast-quality music video that showcased raw, unapologetic emcees expressing their faith. The “Rising Sons” video featured a diverse trio of emcees—a white, Black, and Hispanic artist—who resonated with viewers across various demographics. The video quickly gained traction, landing in rotation on local and national shows worldwide, effectively putting Syntax Records on the map.
The strategy proved successful. Just months after the video’s release, Syntax Records secured international distribution through Diamante Music Group, a pivotal company that had previously launched the careers of notable acts like P.O.D., Cross Movement, Supertones, and Gospel Gangstaz. With this newfound platform, Man of War continued to release thought-provoking music, taking listeners on a distinctive sonic journey that challenged conventional norms.
In addition to his solo work, Man of War became part of the trio Def Shepard, alongside RedCloud and MaxOne of Sackcloth Fashion. Each emcee brought their own unique style to the table, but together, they created a powerful synergy that left audiences in awe, likening their performances to an Olympic event.
An Eye For Talent
Beyond his prowess on the microphone, Man of War possesses an exceptional talent for spotting emerging artists. His keen eye for talent could have easily led him to a successful career in A&R. Throughout his journey, he has collaborated with several prominent figures in the music industry. Notably, DJ Promote, who now tours with Lecrae, did his first-ever tour with Man of War. Their collaboration resulted in a project titled Mextape, showcasing their combined talents and creativity.
In preparation for their tour, Man of War and DJ Promote engaged in a unique bonding experience, spray painting Man of War’s van—a testament to their camaraderie and shared passion for music. Despite his tough exterior, Man of War is known for his generous and gracious nature, always eager to help others. After his tenure at Syntax Records, he took his experience and knowledge to launch his own label, dedicated to developing new talent and nurturing the next generation of artists.
The Servant
Though he has chosen to remain primarily in the underground scene rather than chase industry accolades, Man of War’s servant-hearted approach has earned him something far more valuable: lifelong friendships within the industry. He has always been a team player, ready to lend a hand whenever needed. One memorable incident occurred when his recording session at Syntax Studios was interrupted by a sewage flood caused by city maintenance. Rather than retreating from the chaos, Man of War jumped into action, helping to clean the disgusting mess and support his fellow artists.
What Happened?
Now, it’s our turn to return the favor to Man of War and his family. On August 27th, he was hospitalized after experiencing unfamiliar symptoms, ultimately suffering a stroke that led to him being placed in a medically induced coma. Following surgery, a line was installed to drain excess fluid from his brain, marking a challenging chapter in his life.
According to his eldest daughter, Gianna, three weeks later, on September 18th, Man of War was transferred to a long-term care facility in Denver, three hours away from his family. While he has not yet spoken, he has begun to communicate through blinking, hand squeezes, and other small gestures, offering hope to his loved ones.
As the primary breadwinner for his family, the combination of lost income, mounting medical bills, and his relocation has placed a significant burden on the Orozco family. In response, his eldest son, Josiah, has set up a GoFundMe, which has impressively raised over $9,000 at the time of this article’s publication.
For those unable to contribute financially, there are still ways to help. Keeping Man of War in your prayers and supporting his music, along with the releases from War Records, can make a significant difference during this challenging time.
Providentially, Man of War and I had just discussed releasing two completed songs to give him a little break to focus on upcoming War Records projects. The first track, A New Dawn, is available on all streaming platforms now, while the second track, Look at Dad, is set to be released on October 25.
